One morning - I received this message from one of our engineers.

Kingsley coming up with ‘sloptifacts’
A sloptifact is “Slop” + “Artifact” → aka. something you whipped up low effort with AI
I saw this and I had this moment. Why does everything people build have to be a business or be productive. Let’s just build for the fun of it again. Around the same time, independently I came to the conclusion to build a ‘junk drawer’ - things i want ot build for no reason beyond it being fun.
Building a thing used to cost a month. Now it costs an evening. An evening is cheap enough to waste on something nobody will ever use and we've spent the entire windfall on being more productive.
The other thing I didn't expect: Kingsley's word set the tone for everyone else. One person posts something with "slop" written on it, and everyone else has cover to post the thing they'd been sitting on. You can't hand that out in a meeting. One person shipping junk with a straight face does it in a day.
So go and make yourself a junk drawer, and put something in it that has no reason to exist. A map of human pursuits. A tool with exactly one user, and it's you.
Not because it'll compound into something. It won't. Because it's fun, and we all used to do this for fun, and somewhere in the last ten years that started needing a defence.
Send me your sloptifacts!
Until next time,
Ajay
